DECUS post to Chch
Mr Robin Harrington, manager of the computer centre at the University of Canterbury, has been elected first chairman of the New Zealand user group board of DECUS — the Digital Equipment Computer Users Society. The other members are Mr Richard Naylor, of the Wellington City Council, Mr Ken Aldous, of the Division of Information Technology of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and Dr lan Calhaem, of the Government Printing Office. DECUS New Zealand comes into being on January 1. This coincides with the Australian chapter of DECUS changing its name to the DECUS South Pacific chapter, and the setting up of DECUS Australia. Each national user group will elect its own board, form its own policies, and decide its own activities.
New Zealand activities of DECUS over the last
five years include the annual VAX forum (next year’s will be held at the University of Waikato from February 14 to 16), and an annual conference in Rotorua.
Mr Harrington says independence has a price, and DECUS members in New Zealand will “need to become more involved, and the organisation has to be financially self-sustaining.”
