NZPA Sydney The five-year-old Hawera gelding, Hyak, made a promising debut to his Australian campaign with a close second in the sAust2o,ooo Dimanttina and Co. Handicap (2500 m at Flemington on Saturday. The gelding’s trainer, Kevin Myers, is due to arrive in Melbourne early this week from Hawera to take the horse on to Perth to run in . the sAust3oo,ooo Winfield Perth Cup on January 2. Hyak, carrying 52kg, looked good from the start but failed to reel in the favoured runner, Sir Quest (48kg), on the hard track, his strapper, Michele Jensen, said. “Brent (Thomson) thought he’d be able to peg the other horse back at any time, but he’s a real one-pacer. He should have taken Sir Quest on at the half mile, but he never got closer than half a length.”
