Chamberlains seek $5.4M
NZPA Sydney Lindy and Michael Chamberlain are reportedly seeking sAust4 million ($5.4 million) compensation from the Northern Territory government for wrongful convictions and suffering after the death of their baby, The “Sydney Morning Herald” yesterday reported that the sum was specified in a recent submission from the Chamberlains’ lawyers to the Northern Terri-
tory Attorney-General, Mr Daryl Manzie. Neither the Chamberlains’ solicitor, Mr Stuart Tipple, nor Mr Manzie’s press secretary, Mr Russell Ball, was prepared to comment on the submission and the sum being claimed. Three Northern Territory Supreme Court judges last September quashed Mrs Chamberlain’s conviction for the murder of Azaria at Ayers Rock in 1980 and Mr Chamberlain’s conviction
for being an accessory after the fact. Mr Ball said yesterday that the Attorney-General had sent a letter to the Chamberlains’ lawyers asking them to provide information in addition to their submission. When their reply was received, the Northern Territory Law Department would prepare a submission for the Attorney-General to take to the territory’s Cabinet for a decision.
