Warning about selling game

Gamblers are being warned to stay away from the latest pyramid selling game to hit Christchurch, or face the prospect of a heavy fine. The Commerce Commission said yesterday it would prosecute anyone caught playing or organising Aeroplane ’BB, a game in which people pay $750 to become a passenger on a mythical aircraft. “We are treating this scheme very seriously, more seriously than other pyramid games because this one is widespread,” a spokesman for the commission, Mr Richard Fletcher, said. The scheme works by setting up a mythical plane which has a pilot, two co-pilots, four cabin crew and eight passengers. The players start as passengers, paying $750 for a seat. The passengers’ fares, $6OOO in total, are paid to the pilot, who then leaves the scheme. The plane then divides in two, with the co-pilots moving to head their own plane. The other players are then promoted, and more people are found to take their seats. The game has been played in Auckland and Wellington, but the police there have not received any complaints. Mr Fletcher said individuals could be fined up to $30,000 and bodies corporate, $lOO,OOO, if caught.
