CITY MANAGER TO THE NEW MANUKAU CITY COUNCIL Arguably the premier appointment in local government today, this position becomes available due to the reorganisation of local government in South Auckland, and more particularly the formation of a new Manukau City. The new Manukau City Council will comprise the present Manukau City Council, Papatoetoe City Council and Howick Borough Council. A population of 220,000 people will look to the new Council for the provision of a wide range of services and facilities to its multi cultural Community. The Council will have an expenditure of approximately $l4O million p.a. and a staff of approximately 1,200. The appointment is based in the Council’s main administration building, which is located in the rapidly developing Manukau City Centre at the heart of South Auckland. The City Manager is responsible initially to a Transitional Committee of the three existing Councils, to work towards the formation of the new City Council, which is to be elected on the 1 October 1989. The City Manager will then be responsible to that Council for the overall co-ordination and control of its activities and policy determinations. The position is an exciting one, bearing in mind the continuing growth of the city and the consequent need to review directions and procedures regularly. Significant emphasis is placed on maintenance of harmonious relations within the organisation and with the community at large. Appointment will be made within a current salary range from $94,000 to $1 15,000. This salary scale may come under the jurisdiction of the Higher Salaries Commission. An executive motor vehicle and position costs will be provided. Senior Executives from any sector of the economy who are equally at ease in the boardroom and in the staff cafeteria and who consider that they possess superior skills in the key areas of leadership, management and administration would find this appointment a challenging one. Please submit your application, which will be handled in confidence and with complete discretion, by 3 February 1989 to the Director Management Services, Manukau City Council, Private Bag, Manukau City.
