Ankorman —Laser Lad quinella expected at Invercargill

Special correspondent

Invercargill

Ankorman and Laser Lad are expected to fight out the finish of the $25,000 “Southland Times” Invercargill Trotting Cup at the Invercargill Trotting Club’s meting tomorrow evening. Ankorman, an under-rated horse, and Laser Lad, which regained his best at the New Zealand Cup carnival, stand out in a small eight-horse field of modest calibre.

Ankorman graduated to open class with a tradesmanlike success at Addington on Cup day and made Rostriever Hanover work hard for victory on the first day of this meeting. Admittedly, Ankorman was saved in a handy trailing spot by Bob Cameron, but he sprinted home purposefully. Ankorman actually headed Rostriever Hanover 120 metres out, and he was unlucky to encounter such a dour stayer, which worried him out of the major prize.

Laser Lad, winner of the 1986 Times Cup, has been away from racing and official trials since winning on the second night of the Cup carnival at Addington. The Noodlum gelding also won a CB-C 9 race at Addington on Show Day, downing Shot, a rival tomorrow. Laser Lad gave Shot 10 metres on that occasion and meets him on level terms tomorrow. Shot was successful on the second night of the Cup meeting, stalling off Fair Chip. Chartross, an improved stayer and a find of the early summer circuit, is favoured for the O’Kane Pace, second leg of the T.A.B. double. Rosy Score, a first night place-getter, and Glenburn Star, which has won four' of his five starts this term, are also high on the list of fancies.

Mister Sparks, a winner over tomorrow night’s distance of 3200 metres at the Wairio meeting, is one for longer odds.
