Camallino Star out to erase memory of defeat
By DAVID MCCARTHY Camallino Star could be making her final appearance on the Wingatui track in the Air New Zealand Hazlett Stakes tomorrow and will be out to erase the memory of her only other, when the beaten favourite in the same race 12 months ago.
Camallino Star was then fresh from a win in the Levin Stakes in track record time and naturally a warm favourite on her northern form which followed a Churchill Stake victory at the Cup meeting at Riccarton. But she was, in fact, a failure and close to being a dismal one fading out to a moderate fifth after being handy. Camallino Star, carrying the equivalent of weight-for-age that day, was ridden for the first time by Grant Davison and it is the country’s leading horseman who will attempt to continue a subsequently successful association with the mare tomorrow. Davison was the rider when she won at Riccarton last week and it is that race which could be the key to her avenging last year’s defeat. In spite of her Levin win trainer Garth jackson felt Camallino Star was not as race fit going into last year’s race it being over three weeks then since she ended a busy schedule. That was backed up by the fact she won her next outing, the Timaru Cup, in style.
respect. The four-year-olds, Spangles and Reykjavik, look the other obvious threats with Polacca a long odds shot as is Shorty Bijou. Spangles had a big ally in the form of weight scale when winning at Riccarton last Saturday but did it in style. This is a much tougher assignment but on her best three-year-old form she should be equal to the task.
Reykjavik failed in bad ground on the second day at Omoto but won on the first day of that meeting and is suited to this sort of race.
Polacca will be at good odds but went a fine race at this distance to run third to Ultra Sound and Morgan Page, beaten a head and a long neck, in the Runacres Handicap at Riccarton. He was within 0.5 kg of Ultra Sound then and meets her on better terms this time.
Shorty Bijou made a late rush for fifth in the Ken Lane International Stakes at Riccarton at this distance when In Pursuit beat Camallino Star. Shorty Bijou was within 1.5 kg of Camallino Star that day but is 4.5 kg below her this time and must be considered. Vamos A Beber, often backed, and frequently beaten, could produce an improved result in the second leg the Tourist Hotel Handicap where the likely favourite is Miss Madonna which has not raced for over a month. She has the talent but the other horse is one more seasoned and others include the stablemates Galloping gourmet and Thanks a Million and track specialist Comparable, a bold and unlucky second at Riccarton last week.
Camallino Star was a narrow winner last week but Davison was being as kind to her as he could with a view to her holiday campaign and the fact she had been of the scene for almost a month. Camallino Star must carry more than weight-forr-age tomorrow but should be up to the task. Many will point to Ultra Sound as the one to beat in spite of her failure at Tapanui. She has plenty of weight and might even like more ground at this stage but se is obviously worthy of
