Awapuni

Special correspondent Palmerston North Lady Aloof served notice that she could put the others to the test in the Selwyn Motors Stakes at Manawatu tomorrow when she worked brilliantly at Awapuni yesterday. Lady Aloof had an off day in the Dulcie Stakes at Te Rapa yet her trial yesterday suggests she is going to run a big race this week-end. Working on a fast plough Lady Aloof ran a slashing 1200 m in 1:15.4, the last 600 m in 38 and the 1000 m in 1:1.4. It was an exceptional effort by the mare, probably one of her best in training. Soubrette impressed by running 1000 m in 1:4, the last 600 m in 39.4. She will have to come from the back tomorrow, but she is ready and has the form to back up her open class debut.

Nauta shaded Tasha at the end of 800 m in 50, the last 600 m in 37. Nauta has thrived since winning easily here last month and, though drawn wide tomorrow, will be a top chance. Irish Anchor left 1000 m behind in 1:5, the last 600 m in 38. He is in great order for the Axis Hanidcap. Infantry ran another fine gallop, completing 1400 m in 1:32.6, the last 600 m in 37.6. He is in the highweight and will be hard to beat. Fort Cheval enhanced his A.M.P. Cup prospects by working well over 1000 m in 1:5.5, the last 600 m in 38.8. Amythest left 800 m behind in 50, the last 600 m in 37 but another race may improve her.

Old Pirate, engaged in the highweight, ran home an easy 1200 m in 1:21, the last 600 m in 40.6.

Zelazny and El Kara, rivals in the A.M.P. Cup, worked strongly over 1200 m in 1:18, the last 600 m in. 38 with little between them at the end. Star Tripper, which would appreciate some rain, was paired with Rainbow Reason. They left 1000 m behind in 1:4, the last 600 m in 38. Melleck ran from the 600 m in 39 and Fun on the Run and First Rullah enhanced their week-end prospects by running an impressive 1000 m in 1:4.8, the last 600 m in 39.8.

Lutece worked stylishly over 800 m in 50, the last 600 m in 37 and the southerner Alberjon hit out pretty well over 800 m in 50.6, the last 6&Jm in 37.6. He has good form and Tony Prendergast is happy with him.
