Willem Vink has royal chance to extend record
By
JEFF SCOTT
The Rangiora trainer, Maurice Vermeulen, has a royal chance of extending a fine record in the feature race at the Rangiora Harness Racing Club’s summer meeting tomorrow with his talented four-year-old Willem Vink.
Vermeulen produced Willem Vink’s sister, Regal Cheval (El Patron — Royal Cheval) to win the corresponding race in 1981, and repeated with Regal Cheval’s star son, Speedy Cheval, in last year’s C 5 D.B. Draught Pace. The Broadfield reinsman, Robert Dunn, who partnered Speedy Cheval in last year’s renewal, will also be trying for back-to-back wins in the race with Vermeulen-trained representatives. Dunn replaces Willem Vink’s regular reinsman, Peter Jones, who will be in Invercargill with Laser Lad, a leading chance in the “Southland Times” Cup. Willem Vink, the winner of three of his five races on grass tracks, cleared maidens with Dunn as his reinsman at last year’s Rangiora summer meeting. The El Patron gelding resumed this term with back-to-back wins at Motukarara and Addington, then raced well in strong company at the New Zealand Cup meeting for a second to Me An Roy on Cup Day and a solid fifth off 10m on Show Day.
His biggest danger tomorrow should be Dakota, a convincing last-start grass track winner of the Geraldine Cup at Orari.
The Noodlum entire also raced well without gaining a trick at last month’s New Zealand Cup carnival and stays better than most.
Nimble Phil has gone from strength-to-strength in recent weeks, producing a dour late claim to win over 3200 m in a blanket finish last time at Methven. He meets Beau Peer and Von Luckner, third and fourth on that occasion, on 10m worse terms this week. Considering they were less than a head from Nimble Phil at Methven, they make slightly more appeal tomorrow. False Image and Cool Charm Girl are others which would not surprise by finishing among the placings, the latter having trialed well mid-week. Module Boy, unlucky to be beaten last week at Oamaru after being checked early, would not need to improve much to win the second leg of the T.A.B. double, the Peter Cocks, Ltd, Pace. Dual Sticks, a C2 winner in class record time over 2600 m mobile at Addington last week, races well oh grass and should go close again, while Peta Eyre, a fine fourth last time at Methven, Fiddler, Crowley and Canasta King, are others high on the list of fancies in an open line-up.
