A study into possible uses for pomace will be undertaken by the winner of the 1989 Don Sinclair Research Fellowship.

Mr David Watt, of Queenstown, will be the first recipient of the fellowship, the chairman of the fellowship committee. Dr Catherine Harvey, announced. The fellowship is named after a former chairman of the New Zealand Apple and Pear Marketing Board.

Thousands of tonnes of pomace are produced in New Zealand each year as a by-product of processing apples. The crushed apples are usually disposed of as waste.
