It was quite noticeable that many Callistemons throughout the Christchurch area and beyond suffered varying degrees of frost damage last winter. However, apart from several specimens of C. “Little John,” most seem to have survived, to revel in the prevailing warm drought-like conditions, by flowering much earlier than usual and with seemingly greater abundance. To maintain vigour and encourage bushy development, pruning should be carried out as soon .as flowering has passed its best. Both species and forms are tolerant and responsive to hard cutting back if necessary.
