Party politics for Iran
NZPA-Reuter Nicosia
Iran announced yesterday that it would permit approved political parties to operate but warned wouldbe politicians to learn from the bitter experience of the past. “We can proceed with this important matter... now there is relative tranquillity and... we are not facing a face-to-face war with Iraq,” the Interior Minister, Ali Akbar Mohtashemi, said on Tehran Radio. Mr Mohtashemi said the Constitution and laws passed in September 1981 would be the basis for the parties to operate. He said that political parties had never enjoyed a good reputation and warned all organisations to learn from the bitter past of such groups and abide by Islamic and Iranian values.
There are currently no officially recognised political parties in Iran. The Communist Tudeh Party was outlawed in 1983 and vigorously suppressed by Iran’s Muslim fundamentalist leaders. Mr Mohtashemi said that only politically educated people who were experts at management and were dedicated to solving the problems of Iran’s Islamic system could organise a party.
