Victoria Square contracts let

The first contracts for the $990,000 Stage Two of the redevelopment of Victoria Square were let yesterday. The contracts are for the main site development work and for lighting and power supply. The successful tenderers are Calcon Asphalt, Ltd, and the Municipal Electricity Department. Work will begin on January 30 when Oxford Terrace and Victoria Street will be physically stopped to vehicles. The streets were legally stopped in 1986.

The council’s works and planning department is the project manager for the redevelopment. Information signs in Victoria Square and leaflet drops to surrounding business areas will be used to advise the public of pro-

gress. The stage’s cost has been reduced from $1.19 million to $995,311 with the deletion of a proposed parking precinct on the square’s Armagh Street frontage. The funds for the project will come from the central city cash-in-lieu account.

The Stage Two contracts should be completed by August. The area will then be landscaped and planted. Stage Three of the square’s redevelopment is under review by council staff for a report to the council early next year.

The report would cover the treatment of the Victoria Street bridge and the need for public toilets, said the deputy general manager (parks), Mr Rob Dally.
