G.M. to fit warning devices

The N.O.D.S. (Near Obstacle Detection System), a device for warning reversing drivers of hidden obstacles, will be fitted to cars of General Motors in 1991. It is one of the first automotive products to emerge from the Hughes/ G.M. association.

Hughes Microwave Products Division is under contract with Delco Electronics to make 200 of the warning devices, which are a little larger than a cigarette pack.

Mounted on a car’s rear panel or bumper, the device sounds an alarm if the car is reversed towards an obstacle such as a pole or a fence, or even a child who might be out of .sight. The N.O.D. system monitors reflections of its microwave signal within a range of 3.5 metres. Any change causes a frequency shift to alert the driver.
