Wilburys produce LP worthy of talents

THE TRAVELLING WILBURYS “The Travelling Wilburys” (Wilbury, 25796-1). An immediate reaction to the concept of Lucky, Otis, Charlie jun., Nelson, and Lefty Wilbury, better known as Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne (formerly of the Electric Light Orchestra), Tom Petty, George Harrison, and (the now late) Roy Orbison making a record is that the critics will bury it in an avalance of criticism.

Surprisingly, though, what could be considered the supergroup of the ’Bos make a far better fist of things than did many of the star-studded bands of the late ’6os and early ’7os. Between them the Wilburys have made a recipe for success. The sense of fun they had making the recording comes across strongly, and it contains a number of highlights. The single, “Handle

With Care,” with each Wilbury taking a turn on vocals, is a good example of how the album sounds. The predominantly acoustic guitar sound makes the Wilburys seem simple yet enjoyable. The album closes on a similar fivepart harmony with “End Of The Line,” commenting about rock music and being old and grey. But, for four out of five, it’s not all over, baby blue.— NEVIN TOPP.
