Landcorp ready to help
Landcorp yesterday indicated that it would be prepared to assist the Ngai Tahu tribe in remedies sought through the Waitangi Tribunal and the Crown.
“Landcorp does not want to look over the fence at Ngai Tahu struggling on difficult country,” said the legal adviser to the corporation, Mr Kit Mouat.
Ngai Tahu people had
an affinity with the land and required a strong economic base for the future. “The emphasis here is on economic power to develop and prosper.” Some land owned by Landcorp came into the category of “worthless land” which had been left to the tribe from 1840.
“Just because land is available it should not be
forced on the tribe.” Mr Mouat indicated that the corporation would assist the Waitangi Tribunal in discussions between parties to the claim and advise the tribe, if required, on the administration of land distributed as a remedy. Landcorp would have to be compensated for any land which might be transferred to the tribe, Mr Mouat said.
