Gorbachev flies home
NZPA-Reuter New York The Soviet leader, Mr Gorbachev, left New York for home yesterday and postponed visits to Cuba and Britain because of a devastating earthquake which has killed thousands of people in Armenia. Making the announcement at
a hastily summoned midnight news conference, the Soviet Foreign Minister, Mr Eduard Shevardnadze, said Mr Gorbachev believed that “when the people are suffering he has to be there to direct” rescue efforts. Troop cuts, page 8
