Lyttelton to mark anniversary
By
PAM MORTON
Lyttelton will adopt a carnival atmosphere next week to mark the anniversary of the First Four Ships to arrive in the port.
The event is being organised by the Lyttelton District Community Council to coincide with the anniversary on December 17.
A regatta was traditionally held at the port to mark the date with largely water-based activities including rowing regattas and greasy poles.
The council’s chairwoman, Ms Claudia Reid, said the last regatta was held about 50 years ago. Ms Reid said this year’s carnival would be landbased but it was hoped in the future that activities could be planned around the waterfront and inner harbour.
A barn dance is planned on Saturday evening in the Harbour Board Hall. The main activities will take place on Sunday, December 18.
The town’s main street will be closed to traffic from 11 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. and the public will be able to mingle with clowns, street actors and a roving moa.
Entertainment will include a Punch and Judy show, morris dancing and a puppet show. The final event will be a tug-of-war contested by supporters of hotels in the town.
