N.Z., Australia join in ozone research
New Zealand and Australian scientists will join in research on the ozone layer and the greenhouse effect.
Scientists agreed at a recent meeting in Melbourne to establish a network to provide a free flow of information.
Organisations involved in the scheme are the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Zealand Meteorology Service, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and the Australian Bureau of Meterology. Two initial joint projects will study the role of oceans in the greenhouse effect and ozone, and re-
lated atmospheric changes. Dr Martin Manning, of the D.S.I.R. institute of nuclear sciences, said the link could lead to earlier detection of ozone-de-pleted air drifting over both countries bringing increased ultra-violet light and the risk of skin cancer.
He said Australian scientists strongly supported joint research, particularly where New Zealand facilities complemented their own.
Dr Manning said the combined resources of both countries would also give greater access to information from the South Pacific and Antarctic regions.
