Final Aid top Otaki chance

Special correspondent Wellington The Te Aroha visitor, Final Aid, is leaving his own area for Otaki tomorrow and it is a trip that could bring some reward. Final Aid will contest the $lO,OOO Caltex Dealers Handicap (1600 m at the Otaki-Maori Racing Club’s meeting and in a useful field he looks to have an excellent chance of winning. Final Aid is a six-year-old which last raced on November 30, running fourth at Tauranga. He has already been successful twice this season. The big problem for Final Aid is a wide draw, but he looks to have the ability to overcome that. He has been successful on both wet and dry tracks.

The Rotorua mare, Shahzamani, looms as a major chance if she makes the trip. She raced at Cambridge last Tuesday and finished on for third in the Dulcie Stakes, won by Espiare. Her form this season has been sound. The Caltex Handicap is headed by Gallipoli, the winner of the New Zealand Cup at his last outing. Globetrotter, after winning fresh and then failing at Ellerslie in the Lion Red Stakes, should be better placed in this one, though he has drawn the outside. Sandford, from Cambridge and the Taupo galloper, Red Neck, are among the other visitors, while Margarella, Mister Aythorpe and Honour Bright are locals with strong form backgrounds.
