NZPA-AAP Sydney The canny Scots may have found the right recipe for preventing heart disease, according to new research showing oat bran and fish are a powerful anti-cholesterol combination. And it’s not necessary to pour fish oil on your breakfast oats, according to the C.5.1.R.0. researchers who made the discovery. Traditional Scottish recipes had shown it was possible to combine oats and fish to produce a very tasty meal, said the principal research scientist, Dr David Topping.

He was speaking after presenting the unpublished study to a Nutrition Society Conference in Sydney. “We are not suggesting a stew of oat bran and fish oil,” he said. His personal preference was for pan fried fish sprinked with oats.

Dr Topping, of the C.5.1.R.0.’s human nutrition division in Adelaide, said studies in animals had shown fish oil and oat bran interacted to have a far greater effect on cholesterol than if eaten alone.
