AUSTRALIA Wall St lifts shares

NZPA-AAP Sydney Overseas buying and a rally on Wall Street sparked a rise on the Australian sharemarkets for the second day running, dealers said.

There was a bit of interest from Hong Kong and Japan, one broker said. These buyers entered because of the overnight gain on Wall Street.

There was no genuine longterm investment coming .in and local institutions would stay away until the Australian dollar fell, one broker said. "The market is dead,” another said.

At the end of trading, the all ordinaries index had climbed 12.0 points to 1471.3.

The all industrials index jumped 21.6 points to 2457.6, the all resources 4.9 to 734.0 and gold 7.0 to 1520.0. About 89.21 m> ; .lion shares worth sAustls2.6oM were traded nationally as price rises led falls by about four to three.

The industrial stars were Amatil, which rose 18 cents to 900, Brambles 20c to 1095, Email 8c to 428, News Corp 30c to 990 and TNT 5c to 385. The leading industrial sectors were building and entrepreneurs. Eight cent gains took Boral to 353, Goliath Cement to 180, and Adelaide Brighton Cement to 215. Bell Group rose 10c to 140 and lEL 6c to 139. The banks were strongly bid. Westpac rose 6c to 564, National Australia 4c to 670 and ANZ 6c to 542. FAI was a loser again, shedding 4c to 316.

The lesser known stocks nudged the blue-chips off the turnover lists. About 5.29 M QCT Resources were traded as the share price rose 2c to 107. About 5M Oilmet shares were dealt as the price stayed steady at 23. JN Taylor shares rose 1c to 221. Gold stocks to climb were Broken Hill Metals, up 5c to 185, Dominion 4c to 138 and Niugini Mining 5c to 210.

Gold stocks to slide were Metana down 6c to 524, Whim Creek 4c to 166 and Gwalia 5c to 150.

Oil stocks were popular buys. AGL jumped 5c to 210, Australian Oil and Gas 3c to 58 and Woodside 4c to 188.
