Television, radio boards named

PA Wellington The Government yesterday announced the boards of the new Television New Zealand, Ltd and Radio New Zealand, Ltd State-owned enterprises. The TVNZ, Ltd board will be chaired by a former Broadcasting Corporation of New’ Zealand board member, Mr Brian Corban of Auckland. Mr Corban, a solicitor, has served on the Ministerial advisory committees on the establishment of the two SOEs. Other board members are Dr Jocelyn Harris, an associate professor of English at Otago University, a Christchurch consultant, Mr Peter Leeming, an Auckland accountant, Ms Janet Clapcott, a Nelson writer and businesswoman, Ms Judy

Finn, a Maori fisheries negotiator and former BCNZ board member. Mr Tipene O’Regan, of Wellington, and a Dunedin accountant, Mr Murray Valentine.

Radio NZ, Ltd’s chairman will be an Oamaru solicitor, Mr Richard Rowley, who also previously served on the BCNZ board and on the Ministerial advisory committees on the establishment of the new SOEs. Other members are Dunedin solicitor Judith Medlicott, an Auckland accountant, Ms Barbara Astill, a Christchurch businessman, Mr David Spence, an Auckland businesswoman, Ms Susan Suckling, a former BCNZ board member, Mr John Swinburn, of Napier, and an Otaki journalist, Ms Queenie Rawinia Hyland. Minister of Broadcasting, Mr Hunt, the Minister of State-owned Enterprises, Mr Stan Rodger, and the Minister of Finance, Mr Douglas, said the appointments had a good mix of broadcasting and business skills.

While the new organisations were expected to become efficient and profitable they were also expected to continue to reflect New Zealand identity and culture in their programming, the statement said.

Until July 1 the Ministry of Commerce will be responsible for the transitional administration of the public broadcasting fee.

After that TVNZ, Ltd and Radio NZ, Ltd will have to negotiate with the new Broadcasting Commission over allocations of the fee.
