National wants new exam
PA Wellington The National Party wants to introduce a national certificate for senior school pupils as an alternative to the present bursary and scholarship examinations.
The Opposition spokesman on education, Dr Lockwood Smith, said yesterday that programmes would be flexible, modular, vocationally oriented and designed to meet the needs of employers and tertiary institutions.
He said sixth and seventh form students would be able to study towards this certificate at schools, polytechnics and in approved work places. Employers and the tertiary sector would have input into the design and structure of the modules..
“I seriously believe that a national certificate policy is far more appropriate for a country that is crying out for a more highly skilled workforce. “National’s policy will ensure that the gap is bridged more effectively for the student between both school and the workforce, but between school and the polytechnics and universities.”
