SUBURBAN The competition leader, Merivale-Papanui, Baisweil and New Brighton had wins in round five of the Suburban senior cricket on Saturday. Sumner and Hornby drew their match. Merivale-Papanui now has a 13-point advantage over its nearest rival, Halswell, which has leapt up the table after two consecutive wins. New Brighton has edged up to third position, pushing Sumner down to fourth spot. At Edgar Macintosh Park, Heathcote was always struggling to match MerivalePapanui’s first innings score of 228, and completed its 50 overs at 168. Dave Ward was unbeaten on 52. Mike Hogan was the chief wicket-taker for Merivale-Papanui, taking five wickets for 29. Merivale-Papanui then continued its sound batting form declaring to give Heathcote a target of 184 runs to win. Fifteen runs were scored off the first three overs and it looked promising for Heathcote, until the fall of two wickets close together signalled a collapse. Heathcote was dismissed for 103 with just over three overs left. Ken Stagg and Hogan took three wickets apiece. Craig Courtis and Ron Provan chipped in with two each. At Riccarton Domain, Upper Riccarton, chasing a first-innings target of 173, added 19 to its overnight score, losing five wickets in the process. A sporting declaration by Halswell at 144 for seven, gave Upper Riccarton every chance. The 182 runs required for victory could easily have been in range for Riccarton had conditions been better. However, on a wet, low wicket, the home side only reached 107. Mike Owens captured five wickets; Kevin Williams and Tony Pugh chimed in with two each. New Brighton accounted

for Richmond Working Men’s Club at Rawhiti Domain with eight overs to spare. Resuming after being one wicket for six runs overnight, New Brighton declared with an over-all lead of 211. The required runs were out of Richmond’s range. It steadily lost wickets and was dismissed well short of the

target for 119. Sumner and Hornby’s game resulted in a draw after Sumner avoided the follow-on at Denton Park. Glenn Bateman and Dave .Boreham added 19 to the overnight score before Sumner was dismissed, still 82 runs behind Hornby’s first-innings total. Alan Robertson batted strongly for another solid 42 to match his 43 in the first innings, and, along with Trevor Flutey, he gave Hornby a comfortable 230run advantage. This was just a little out of Sumner’s reach; it batted out the day to be 59 runs short with two wickets in hand. John Sansom had seen it off to a good starrt with 61 and Owen Southen, and later in the innings, Ray Steele, pitched in. Only one century by Gary Allen in the fourth D grade, was scored in the lower grades. Allen scored 117 for Heathcote. The only hat-trick - was taken by David Yaxley, for Lyttelton, in the third C grade. Yaxley took four for 21 against Merivale-Papanui. Another effort of note in the lower grades came from George Nukunuku for New Brighton three D. Besides an innings of 99, Nukunuku took six wickets for 24 from nine overs.
