Lavery, King in deserved golf win

After being runners-up twice in the last three years, Davitt Lavery and Annette King scored a well-merited victory in the Canterbury mixed golf foursomes at Ellesmere yesterday. King, especially, deserved a Canterbury title after also finishing second in the 1987 and 1988 provincial women’s foursomes championships. Lavery and King produced the only round below par, a one-under 71 in the afternoon, to win the title bj' two strokes from the halfway leaders, the Harewood pair, Mark Street and Toni Batey, and the Amberley hus-band-and-wife team of lan and Moana Pollock. After nine holes the unheralded pairing of Tom Whittaker and Daphne Johnson had stolen a march on the fancied combinations with, a brilliant outward nine of 32, four-under par. Street and Batey were in close pursuit on 33. Street and Batey held

their solid form until the last hole, the course’s ninth, they took five on the par-3. If they had reason to curse then they had even more reason later in the day. Their second foray at the hole produced the same result, Street hitting the green in one and the pair conspiring to take four putts. The Pollocks, playing consistently, were in line

for the title after 27 holes. They were a shot ahead of Lavery • and King, but the eventual champions birdied 10, 11 and 14 (the course’s first second and fifth holes) to spurt to a lead which 'They held comfortably to the finish. Leading scores: — Senior 146 — D. Lavery and A. King, 75, 71. 148 — M. E. Street and T. Batey, 72, 76; I. R. Pollock and M. Pollock, 74, 74. 152 — B. M. Walsh and N. Mann, 76, 76; B. T. Tucker and V. Collis, 78, 74; N. M. Griffiths and J. Benschop, 77, 75. 153 — G. Smith and K. Williams, 78, 75; P. Smith and K. Starr, 77, 76. 154 — B. G. Paterson and J. Reese, 76, 78; P. Thomas and L. Douglas, 79, 75; T. Whittaker and D. Johnson, 74, 80. Junior 166 — F. Mo watt and Mrs Mowatt, 84, 82. 168 — T. Thomas and J. Beckingsale, 87, 81.
