SUBURBAN New Brighton gained first innings points and Hornby finished in a strong position against Sumner at the end of the first day’s play in round five of the Suburban senior cricket competition on Saturday. After winning the toss and batting, New Brighton reached 184 for six at the end of 50 overs against Richmond W.M.C. at Rawhiti Domain. Derek Burrell played fluently for 52. In reply, Richmond lost wickets steadily against the persistent Andrew Knowles

and Phil Harris, who both claimed three wickets. Richmond declared 98 runs behind and captured an early wicket in New Brighton’s second innings. Hornby racked up the useful total of 214 against Sumner at Denton Park after a slow start, with Mark Lovegrove and Bob Kerr responsible for most of the runs. Sumner’s lax fielding at times aided Hornby’s task. Sumner struggled in reply and finished the day at 113 for nine, still two runs away from the follow-on. Dale Patel bowled his spinners effectively to take three for 21 off 12 overs. Wickets also fell steadily at Riccarton Domain where Halswell, after being sent into bat, totalled 173 for nine. Andrew Hargreaves and Wayne Burt prospered after giving chances early in their innings. Riccarton began splendidly on an easy-paced pitch and the openers, Gary Hodder and Chris Dockerell, compiled 62. However, the introduction of Kevin Williams into the attack changed Baisweil's fortunes; he collected four wickets. Upper Riccarton ended the day 56 runs in arrears with five wickets standing and eight overs to bat. Merivale-Papanui recovered well at Edgar Macintosh Park against Heathcote. It

was 57 for five before Ken Stagg and Brian Cleverly revived its fortunes with a sixth-wicket partnership of 137. Although Hea/hcote lost only four wickets before stumps it has only 10 overs remaining in which to score 95 runs for the first innings points. Andy Atkinson (MerivalePapanui, fourth B) scored the only century and there were two hat-tricks — to Ray Boyer (Southern Districts, fourth D) and Roger Stagg (Merivale-Papanui, third A).
