North Canterbury Sound play benefits Fernside-Ashgrove

Fernside-Ashgrove has taken the lead in the Ashley senior one-day cricket competition with sound batting and bowling. It beat Kaiapoi after a well-struck 46 runs by Brian Plaskett and some tight bowling by H. Henderson, who took three wickets for 13 runs, and Brent Casey, who took two wickets for 54 runs. Oxford-Carleton recorded its first one-day victory beating Sefton. Robert Judson destroyed the Sefton innings taking five wickets for 24 runs. His wickets came from just six overs. Chasing such a modest total, the Oxford-Carleton line-up looked secure. However, a collapse toward the end of the innings looked as if Sefton might take the match. The experience of Tony O’Loughlin and Sefton’s missed chances caused the combined side to win. There was no result from

the Rangiora v. Ohoka encounter. The matches resulted.— Fernside-Ashgrove 165 beat Kaiapoi 144. Sefton 126 lost to OxfordCarleton 127/8. Championship points: Fern-side-Ashgrove 12, Kaiapoi 6, Oxford-Carleton 6, Rangiora 6, Ohoka 0, Sefton 0. Sefton v. Oxford-Carleton After being sent in and losing an early wicket, Sefton’s Robert Lynskey and Tony Laffey produced a sound, if slow partnership of 77 for the second wicket. The introduction of Judson to the bowling attack then caused the complete collapse of the Sefton line-up. Warrick Thomas and Warren Boocock saw Oxford through to 75 for the loss of one wicket. However, OxfordCarleton had its own collapse and it was only O’Loughlin and poor Sefton catching which helped it to win the match. Sefton 126 (Robert Lynskey

36, A. Laffey 28, T. McCartey 36; R. Judson 5/24, J. Nortman 2/15, D. Judson 2/25) lost to Oxford-Carleton 127/8 (W. Thomas 36, O’Loughlin 32 n. 0., W. Boocock 24; N. Proudfoot 2/11, P. Sharpe 2/ 13, J. Hanna 2/15, A. Wyllie 2/25). Fernside-Ashgrove v. Kaiapoi The combined team batted first and was dismissed in the 45th over. Kaiapoi, who had prised Russell Merrin out of retirement to help meet numbers, was dismissed in the 42nd over. Merrin scored 37 runs including two big sixes in his innings. Brian Plaskett batted well for his 46 runs. Fernside-Ashgrove 165 (Plaskett 46, H. Henderson 22, Andrew Ralph 21, Murray Evans 21; John McAllister 4/ 38, Peter McAllister 2/12) beat Kaiapoi 144 (Merrin 37, J. McAllister 30, Gary Aitken 22; Henderson 3/13, Casey 2/ 54).
