Hockey team in world contest

NZPA-AAP Brisbane The New Zealand under 21 women’s hockey team qualified for the inaugural Junior World Cup for women when it scored a 3-2 win over Australia yesterday. The world tournament will be played in Canada next year. The Australian women’s loss took the gloss off their men’s under 21 team’s record 25-0 win over Fiji yesterday. New Zealand took the initiative in the first minutes with a scrambled goal to Kate Trolove.

Fiona Simpson equalised for Australia at a short corner, only three minutes later, and Sally Carbon converted a penalty stroke to give the home team the lead after 13 minutes. But New Zealand came back with a goal to Keri Weber after 26 minutes and then Trolove scored the winner three minutes after the break. Australia put up a desperate struggle to score in the last half hour but the Kiwi defenders, Katherine Stubbs and Sapphire Cooper, were impassable.
