Fireworks
Sir, —My neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant is heartened by the proposals to move Guy Fawkes Night to mid-winter. All power to Councillors John Burn, Dennis Rich and Clive Cotton (November 22). We thank them. Unlike many citizens, a number of Christchurch residents live in areas affected by neglected growth of weeds, shrubs and trees, providing annual hazards, through drought periods, from careless firecracker usage. Out-of-town revellers target such localities, and again this year there were hours of anxiety, until they dispersed, leaving me to tidy up as many beer cans as spent, acrid crackers within 2m of vulnerable pine tree rubbish. I heartily support the controlled fireworks display in Hagley Park each February and hope that in future fireworks will be controlled for all public enjoyment.—Yours, etc., LORNA ANKER. November 23, 1988.
