Art exhibition

Sir,—On November 8 I visited an art exhibition in the New Brighton Pier Mall. The wording on the price tickets was the same on each picture, namely: “An original painting by ...,” followed by the price. One painting was a copy of Leonard Long’s “Lake lanthe in Mist,” the copyright for which is held by Dominion Breweries. It is possible other paintings were copies and I would suggest that painting groups make sure ail pictures are cleared before acceptance. Some years ago in an exhibition at the C.S.A. Gallery one picture was a copy of a painting in a Walter Foster painting book. — Yours, etc., CLIFF POTTS. November 14, 1988. [The exhibition organiser, Mr M. A. Cook, replies: “The original painting referred to in the letter is an oil painting. The one in the exhibition was a water colour and a label on the back stated it was a reproduction. It was withdrawn when it was pointed out that our labels stated original.”]
