Togging up for the Ice
By
GLEN PERKINSON
The last time the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, encountered temperatures as low as he will today was four years ago. He was standing with the American Vice-President, George Bush, at the funeral of the former Soviet leader, Yuri Andropov, in Moscow. “It was very cold,” Mr Bolger said yesterday afternoon while trying his Antarctic survival kit before heading to the Ice today. Mr Bolger and the senior Government Whip, Mrs
Margaret Austin, will be at Scott Base during a fourday visit. During a light-hearted fitting session in Christchurch yesterday Mr Bolger said his greatest concern was the colour of the underwear the D.S.I.R. had given him. He was satisfied when a pair of blue overalls were found to top his red underwear. Mr Bolger and Mrs Austin will see the base, visit the United States’ installation at McMurdo, and inspect scientific projects.
