Dawn raid at satellite base
Protesters launched a pre-dawn raid to penetrate the Waihopai satellite monitoring base near Blenheim yesterday, and six people were arrested. A spokesman for the Anti-Bases Campaign group, Mr Fergus Wheeler, said 70 protesters stormed the Waihopai perimeter security fence at 4.30 a.m. Six protesters scaled the fence and entered the base compound, where they were promptly arrested for trespass. Mr Wheeler said a big police presence was at the base after a protest was staged there on Saturday. “Our intention was to occupy the base and reassert a statement on democracy,” Mr Wheeler said. The Waihopai satellite monitoring base has been the target of protest action by. New Zealand peace groups, and Mr Wheeler said further action was planned for next February. "The base represents a linking of New Zealand into a wider intelligencegathering strategy and will ber an invasion of privacy.”
