N.Z. boosts Australia by 20,910
NZPA-AAP Canberra New Zealand has become Australia’s second largest source of migrants, adding 20,910 people during the 1987/88 year. The Bureau of Statistics has released figures showing the population grew 268,600 in the year to last June 30 to a total of 16.5 million, the biggest annual increase since 1949/50. Net migration — permanent arrivals minus departures — totalled 143,200, also the largest increase since 1949/50. However, 1987/88 was only the third year since 1949/50 in which net migration exceeded natural increase — the excess of births over deaths — in the total population growth. Britain and New Zealand were the largest source of migrants in 1987/88, followed by the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam and Hong Kong. Figures for settler arrivals, with 1986/87 in brackets, included Britain 24,590 (20,240), New Zealand 20,910 (13,580), the Philippines 10,430 (6410), Malaysia 6240 (3950), Vietnam 5960 (6650) and Hong Kong 5570 (3400).
