Alpine express wins award
By KATHY FEARN The TranzAlpine Express has added the New Zealand Tourism award to its list of accomplishments, after just one year of running. The service was presented with the award by the Minister of Tourism, Mr Hunt, in Wellington last evening. The express, a daily rail connection between Christchurch and Greymouth, was nominated for the award by the South Island. Promotion Association. It also celebrated its first anniversary this week. Since the service began, passenger numbers have grown from 38,000 to 64,000, a 60 per cent increase on those carried on the Midland Line before the TranzAlpine began, said the regional marketing manager, Mr
Gordon Burrows. The train carries about 130 people and because the coast-to-coast trip is a scenic tour by rail, the three carriages have been fitted with panoramic windows. An additional carriage is on stand-by to accommodate extra passengers. “With the type of days we have been having recently and the Christmas period upon us, the extra carriage has been in frequent use,” Mr Burrows said. Two and three-day trips in conjunction with Intercity Bus Services were made by the train, but the daily excursion through the Waimakariri River Gorge was found to be the most popular. “As for the award, it is the best birthday present we could have wished for,” Mr Burrows said.
