Inter-school drama group to perform in U.S.A
A Christchurch inter-school drama group, Discovery, is planning a visit to the United States in May 1989. Mr Timothy Nicholls of Shirley Boys’ High School assisted by colleagues Messrs Laurence Dann; Gary Johnson and Ms Jane Sharman will be taking the group to perform in Los Angeles, and Seattle. In Seattle the group will participate in the Washington state centennial celebrations. They will perform a presentation representing New Zealand culture. This will include Maori material, a play and a satirical piece. It will be performed as part of a combined international production. Groups of young actors from a number of other Pacific Rim countries will also participate. Sixty Christchurch students auditioned for the group and fifteen were selected. They are Penny Ashton. Rangi Ruru Girls’ School, Hamish Campbell Christchurch Boys’ High School, Saul Denize, Shirley Boys’ High School, Venessa Dennehy and Michelle King, Avonside Girls’ High School, Peter Evans, Christ’s College, James Goodrich, Shirley Boys’ High School, Amanda Hanrahan, Anne Nordhaus and Annah Yates, Linwood High School, Megan Harvey, Christchurch Girls’ High School, Jason Kerrison, St Bede’s College, Collette Knowles, Villa Maria College, Angela Stevens, Kaiapoi High School, and Aubrey Tupai, Hillmorton High School. The Discovery inter-school theatre group recreates a scene from their auditions. Mr Noah Tupai (centre), the father of group member Aubrey Tupai, joins in the improvisation.
