Legal action on Hawke report

By

JENNY LONG

Legal action over the Hawke report on post-compulsory education is being taken by the universities of Canterbury and Auckland.

A joint action will be filed in the High Court in Auckland this week.

The chancellor of the .University of Canterbury, Mr Richard Bowron, said the universities contended that the Hawke Committee had breached the rules of natural justice in preparing the report. “The committee members had not consulted the universities, and have produced proposals which adversely affect the universities,” he said.

The Hawke report has been the centre of controversy since its release, with its proposals to tax graduates, and other proposals which could increase Government influence over universities.

Although the Government had not yet made any public decisions on the Hawke report, it had also not been willing to meet the universities and discuss their concerns, Mr Bowron said. “We have not been told precisely what the Government’s attitude is.”
