Union club retains rowing trophies
The Union Rowing Club retained the over-all club and sculling trophies at the Akaroa Rowing Club’s regatta on Saturday. There were near perfect conditions for the 19 events on Akaroa Harbour, with one of the outstanding displays coming from the Union premier four which headed off Christ’s College. Dale Maher, of Union, had a good win in the premier singles, with the former Avon international and now Union club rower, Gary Hay, second. Christ’s College, after a week’s training camp at Akaroa, won the open
eight but as this was a handicap event the trophy went to the CanterburyRangi Ruru crew. Over-all points were: Union 75, Canterbury 42, Cure 24, Christ’s College 17, Akaroa 8, Avon 1. Sculling points: Union 25, Cure 17, Akaroa 14, Canterbury 10, Avon 1. Twelve crews started the D.B. ultra eights but due to their lateness to the start four Avon crews were disqualified. The fastest crew and line honours titles went to the Union-Avon composite crew over a determined but tired Christ’s College No. 1 combination. On handicap, after an
appeal, the Avon senior eight was officially given first placing. It was a gutsy effort by this crew which, some 500 metres from the end, suffered from the collapse through exhaustion of their bowman. The event was virtually incident free but the nine kilometre course proved a stern test of fitness for all involved. Placings were: AvonUnion 36.34, 1; Christ’s College, 37.39, 2; Canterbury, 38.56, 3; Union 11, 39.33, 4; Christ’s College 11, 40.28, 5; Union 111, 43.21, 6; Canterbury 11, 44.05, 7. Handicap winner: Avon 111.
