Vandals attack 22 headstones

Vandals kicked over 22 new headstones at Memorial Park, Bromley, on Monday evening. Three workers from the company who made 16 of the headstones, Decra Art, Ltd, spent most of yesterday at the park trying to repair the damage. Three stones were so badly damaged they would have to be removed but others were able to be set upright again, said Decra Art’s managing director, Mr John Julian.

The repairs in the park were being done free, but fixing the three broken headstones would be costly and relatives would have to be reached, he said. The headstones cost between $6OO and $2OOO each. The vandalised headstones were in the new part of the cemetery, near the toilets. There had been trouble in the area recently and the police were keeping a close watch on activity, said Mr Julian.

Vandalism in cemeteries was a regular occurrence, he said.
