Change of luck likely for Parsons

By

david McCarthy

The Balcairn trainer, John Parsons, a has had mixed fortunes at the Westland meeting so far but seems to hold the key c to the outcome of the Miss Scenicland s 10,000, the feature event on the second p day of the meeting today. Parsons produces Diamond Annie and j Godsin for the 1650 m event, run at tl weight-for-age, and if the former is s certain to start a warm favourite, her c stablemate is a more than useful backup, i Diamond Annie was second last time c out, at Riccarton over 1400 m, to Aquidity d •and before that she had been the bridesmaid also in the McArdle Blood- d stock Breeders’ Stakes at Riccarton on v October 15 running second to Immunise at the same distance. a She had recorded back-to-back wins f< leading up to that event and under the weight-for-age scale here is well treated, a For example Diamond Annie is in d receipt of I.skg today from Newginn, s which will be one of the better supported si runners in the race. I,

At Riccarton, under handicap conditions, Diamond Annie had to give the other mare skg while she gave her stablemate, Godsin, 3.5 kg under the limited handicap conditions of the Breeders’ Stakes. From that perspective Diamond Annie

should be a clear winner though the Hokitika track can prove a challenge for any horse no matter what the talent. Diamond Annie is proven in wet conditions but a fine day yesterday suggested puggy going today which could perhaps pose problems for her. Godsin ran eighth in the Ken Lane International Stakes at Riccarton beating three home and being closer until swamped in the last 50m. The handicapper rated her the equal of Joy Tripper and Morgan Page under those conditions and either would be in strong demand in this sort of company. Veda won nicely in the end on the first day and should thrive on this distance which she has not previously tried. Newginn is a previous winner here and has talent when she puts her best foot forward. Dalmatic has been brought up especially for the race and was far from disgraced at Riccarton in good company. She is an underrated mare and could surprise here, while Goodie Two Shoes, leska and Marwitzer merit some attention on their past deeds. The Parsons stable could also have its say in the second leg, the Des Wright Memorial when Rakau Tender, a good performer here in the past, appeals as the surprise packet of a rather even race.

4 508 leska 3 W. Stevenson 56.0 Did not fire in sprint on the first day on heavy track. Better on top of the ground and could be tested to win. 6 7907 Marwitzer 11 56.0 Outpaced over 1200 m on the first day. Would improve but upset chance only. 8 5087 Midian 5 56.0 Tested to win against a field like this under this weight scale. 9 9027 Newginn 2 J. Williams 54.5 Could be hardest for stablemate (Diamond Annie) to beat. Last run at Riccarton better than it looked and should make bold bid on this weight scale. 18 3221 Veda 1 G.
