Access ‘more acceptable’

By

DEBORAH

McPherson Access job training courses were becoming more acceptable, said the Canterbury Regional and Employment Access Council chairman, Mr Frank Crothall, yesterday. Funding applications from training providers had doubled this year, an indication that the courses were becoming more acceptable, he said. Up to 300 applications

have been received. This year the council spent about $l2 million on training schemes, but would need about $24 million if it were to cater for the large increase in funding applications, he said. Last year the council’s budget was $20.94 million, but about 40 per cent was spent on training allowances. Those allowances would be paid by the Social

Welfare Department next year, as part of the new youth allowance package, said the C.R.E.A.C. manager, Mr Murray Smith. About 50 training providers were at present providing courses, but the council had received 70 applications from different organisations for funding for next year’s courses. Some training providers ran more than one course.
