Convention opposed

Wellington reporter The Government has been urged to resist pressure from its own officials on Friday to sign and ratify the Antarctic Minerals Convention, adopted in Wellington last June. The adoption was strenuously opposed by Greenpeace International and the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition. Australia’s Treasurer, Mr Keating, has said its Government should not sign. Its convenor, Ms Cath Wallace, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was putting pressure on the Government to sign by stealth. They wanted New Zealand and other nations to sign on the morning of the

first day of the year during which the Convention was open for signing, instead, the year should be used for public debate, she said. A senior Ministry of Foreign Affairs official last evening described the claims of coalition as false. The Ministry had not orchestrated Friday’s start to the signing of the convention, he said. This had been unanimously decided by the June conference by 35 nations meeting in Wellington which agreed to the convention.
