The Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, The Most Rev. Basil Meeking, and Sister Susan Ashby, sister of the late Bishop Brian Ashby, with copies of “Held Firm by Faith,” at a function to mark the launching of the book. The book is a history of the Diocese of Christchurch, written by the Rev. Michael O’Meegan, to mark the diocese
centenary in 1987. Although the diocese was formally founded in 1887, the book takes in the earlier hisory of the Catholic Church in New Zealand along with the
diocese’s period of greatest growth up to about 1940. It was important the history of the diocese not be lost, said Bishop Meeking. Many older people would remember much of what the book encompassed. “Many people, I think, will be happy to have the fact and anacedote that it includes,” he said.
