Art for peace
The work of local artist Bill Hammond is included in the exhibition “A Piece of Art for Peace” which is on show between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at the Lyttelton Recreation Centre until December 3.
“A Piece of Art for Peace” was the theme placed before a number of invited artists by John Coley, director of the McDougall Art Gallery, in 1986. Over 80 of New Zealand’s most prominent artists responded. All of the works are on A 4 paper and Involve a range of mediums including photography, collage, painting, printing, and in one instance, a typed aerogramme. Artists involved include Stanley Palmer, Bill Jutton, Peter Siddell, Marilyn Webb, Doris Lusk, Ralph Hotere, Dick Frizzell, Di French, Bing Dawe and Claudia PontEyley. The exhibition has been toured by the Southern Regional Arts Council around small centres in the South islfnd for almost two years. Lyttelton is its last port of call It has been mounted in Lyttelton by the recently formed Lyttelton District Community Arts Council.
