The Island of Lombok is half an hour's flight from Bali. The position will be funded under New Zealand's Development Assistance Programme with Indonesia and will be for a period of one year. The successful appointee will be responsible for the technical aspects of the project, i.e. to research local clay and glaze components, to teach potting’techniques to local potters and to explore and develop possibilities for new products and markets. The Ceramics Adviser will be accountable to the Team Leader but we envisage that the successful applicant will eventually take on the duties of Team Leader on the completion of the present Team Leader's contract. Applicants must have experience and skills in primitive and simple firing techniques, hand built pottery and a knowledge of clays and glazes. Successful teaching experience at high school or adult level is necessary. It is equally essential that applicants possess cultural sensitivity and tolerance, physical fitness, a genuine interest in people, and ability to be practical. Proven ability with foreign languages and experience of Third World countries is desirable.
