Women’s forum examines power

Many women have felt powerless but powerlessness was not a static state, said the chairwoman of the Canterbury Community Council on Alcohol, Ms Dianne Lawrence. Yesterday more than 100 women attended a forum in the Stringleman Room of the Canterbury Public Library arranged by the council, entitled “A Journey for Women — From Powerlessness to Empowerment.” Ms Lawrence said women were often the victims of the problems caused by the abuse of alcohol and other drugs. Such women often felt powerless and this sometimes led to eating disorders, drug addiction and feelings of victimisation and depression. There were still more men than women being treated for alcoholism, and women who came from homes where alcohol was a problem were sometimes physically and sexually abused, Ms Lawrence said. Women did not seem to have the same power as men to leave situations created by alcohol abuse.
