City club auction today

A city gentlemen’s retreat, the Midland Club, is up for auction today and is expected to fetch more than $3 million — possibly from overseas buyers. The 54-year-old club commands a prime innercity site, next to Noahs Hotel on Oxford Terrace. Plans to sell the building were revealed after a club committee meeting earlier this year. The committee decided the club’s building was being under-used — understood to be the result of dwindling membership. The Midland Club’s president, Mr Gavin Fagan, said there were no firm plans for a new
home for the members. Suggestions that Midland Club members would join with another city gentlemen’s club, have been dismissed by Mr Fagan. The agents for the sale today, Ford and Hadfield, Ltd, expect strong interest in the building. Already, Asian and other overseas developers have expressed interest in buying the building. Also, local developers and entrepreneurs are expected to be in the bidding. Ideas for the building include a boutique, hotel and restaurants. The building has an area of 298 sq m. The buyer will also purchase an adjoining site giving a total area of 697 sq m for development.
