Sale of assets

Sir,—“The Press” on Septemoer 15 reported Mr R. Douglas as saying that well-established businesses such as Petrocorp, D.F.C., the Railways, Shipping Corporation, Bank of New Zealand, Air New Zealand and the Tourist Hotel Corporation had cost taxpayers a net SISSM in the past five years. Mr R. Prebble, when addressing Labour Party members in various centres throughout New Zealand, said exactly the same as Mr Douglas. It is common knowledge that the Railways has had huge losses in recent years and it is equally common knowledge that the Bank of New Zealand and Air New Zealand (except perhaps in years when aircraft have been purchased) have made handsome profits. So that the public could be better informed on these issues, would Messrs Douglas and Prebble through this column advise just what profit or loss each of the above businesses has had over the past five years? — Yours, etc., P. S. CUNNINGHAM. October 1, 1988.
