The Govenor-General, Mr Paul Reeves, will present the Duke of Edinburgh gold awards on November 10 at the Christchurch City Council. A record number of awards are being presented to young people of Canterbury this year. Mrs Alison Ballantyne has replaced Mr Peter Guthrey as the area coordinator for the awards. She has been involved in the scheme for many years and is also associated with other youth organisations. The Duke of Edinburgh Awards aim to provide challenge, excitement and a sense of achievement for young people. Anyone can take part in the scheme without having to belong to any particular group. tion of Canterbury Youth Groups. Y.M.C.A. The Y.M.C.A. is running seven youth camps at Wainui during the Christmas holidays. The camps, for children aged five to 15, run for a week and offer the chance to take part in activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, sleepouts, tramping, archery, yachting and abseiling. Boys’ Brigade Children from the Boys’ Brigade and social welfare homes throughout New Zealand and overseas will take part in the annual Christmas holiday camp at the Waipara Boys’ Brigade camp from December 27.
Activities will include, canoeing, computers, screenprinting, photography, yachting and tramping. Information People searching for information on Canterbury youth groups can visit the Association of Canterbury Youth Groups at 565 Colombo Street. The office is open between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. from Monday to Thursday. It has information of the Scout and Guide associations, the Girls’ Brigade, Order of St Johns, Y.M.C.A., Red Cross, Boys’ Brigade, the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and the Every Girls and Every Boys Rally. When the association’s office is unattended, messages can be left on the answer phone, 661-362.
