Former Minister gets in behind
By OLIVER RIDDELL A cheerful former Minister for State-Owned Enterprises, Mr Prebble, walked into Parliament about 20 minutes after the House began its sitting yesterday. After bowing to the Speaker, saluting the Prime Minister and waving to everyone else, he walked up the back of the House and sat in the only vacant seat there. That puts Mr Prebble below Ms Liz Tennet (Lab., Island Bay)
who is the most junior Labour backbencher. There he sits across from Mr Wyatt Creech (Nat., Wairarapa), the most junior National backbencher. It also puts Mr Prebble next to the seat occupied by the former National Prime Minister, Sir Robert Muldoon, when he was disciplined by the former Leader of the Opposition, Mr Jim McLay, in 1985. While Mr Prebble was going down his escalator the new Min-
ister for State-Owned Enterprises, Mr Rodger, was going up his. He walked into the House to ironic applause from the Opposition to take the frontbench seat formerly occupied by Mr Prebble. As he walked past, he turned to the Opposition and bared his teeth in a snarl — a clear reference to Mr Prebble’s reputation as the Government dog always harrying the National Party.
